When I was growing up I was involved in about every sport you could think of. Many of the sports I played, I didn’t have allot of natural talent or speed so what got me by and helped me get better was having a pretty disciplined work ethic. I was a competitor and just hated to loose at anything so I always felt like I gave great effort all the time. But I remember all my coaches always lecturing us when doing conditioning to “Run through the line”
Now allot of people never think about these kind of statements, but I have always been the type of person who for some reason can’t let certain statements go. I use to think man doesn’t this coach know I have given my best effort today and have worked really hard. I use to think you run through the line I’m tired, I’ve worked really hard today whats the big deal if I let up a little on the last step or 2 to catch my breath?
Then as I grew up and started being in business for myself I started think the biggest difference between one person being successful and another just doing ok is the smallest of steps of execution or effort, just the willingness to just do a little bit more sometimes makes all the difference.
I started to think about Olympians for example, how many Olympians have been 1 step or 1/100 of a second from being a gold medal winner or even a silver medal winner instead of just getting the bronze medal or no medal at all?
See my belief is that when you become the type of person that “Runs through the line” thats when real success and change really happens. Most will continue to work hard but coast those last couple steps in everything they do in life giving them less than the results they expected.
In our business I always know the people that “Run through the line” because on the last day of the month our company always ends our promotion of the month at midnight pacific time and the runners (leaders) are always finishing up their day at just past midnight.
They don’t say things like I’ve had a pretty good month I think I’ll call it a day early , theres always tomorrow or I’ll do better next month. Leaders are finishers and not only do they “Run through the line” the last day of the month but they “Run through the line” everyday never coasting those last 2 steps. I believe when you change your philosophy to this mentality real success can and will begin for you.
